Singapore, 12 June 2017 (Monday) – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will kickstart its July to December 2017 concert season with a gala concert of keyboard extravaganza featuring award-winning pianist Sun Yingdi and American organist Chelsea Chen, who will play the largest pipe organ in Singapore at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Gala: Sun Yingdi & Chelsea Chen Keyboard Extravaganza will be held on 8 July 2017, Saturday, at 7.30pm.
Sun Yingdi clinched the First Prize at the 7th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. In February 2017, he became a jury member of the international selection rounds of the 11th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. Sun Yingdi is well-known for his interpretation of Liszt and was commended by the media as the “Liszt in Primary Colours”. Along with SCO, he will be presenting two highly acclaimed Chinese piano works: the riveting piano and orchestra piece Against Typhoon, composed by Liu Shikun according to Wang Changyuan’s guzheng solo Against Typhoon, and the much awaited Yellow River Piano Concerto which originates from Xian Xing Hai’s Yellow River Cantata.
American organist and composer Chelsea Chen, was the award recipient of the Lili Boulanger Memorial Award in 2009 and winner of the Augustana/Reuter National Organ Competition in 2005, and is the artist-in-residence at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Her oeuvre of solo and chamber music pieces have been performed internationally. In this concert, Chelsea Chen will perform with SCO for the first time the First and Fourth movements from Kuan Nai-chung’s Symphony No. 2.
SCO will also perform SCO composer-in-residence Eric Watson’s rearranged A Journey Around Singapore that was world-premiered in January 2017 by SCO, which features different parts of Singapore – east, west, south, north and the city – through music.
Chinese composer, Zhu Lin’s new composition titled Dong Village, will also be world premiered in this concert.
