Singapore, 11 December 2017 (Monday) – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) collaborates with multi-cultural Singapore Young Artist Award recipients to drum up a roaring year of the 2018 with a percussion-themed concert! Percussion Fusion will be held on 12 and 13 January (Friday and Saturday), 8pm, at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium. This concert will be conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong.

SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong was the Young Artist Award (YAA) recipient in 2002. In this concert, he will be conducting SCO, featuring tabla musician Nawaz Mirajkar and percussionist Riduan Zalani who were the recipients of the 2011 and 2015 Young Artist Award respectively. The concert will commence with the first two works of the same Chinese title “融”: the first would be the Singapore premiere of famous composer Xu Changjun’s Fusion (融), the second would be Singapore composer Wang Chenwei’s Confluence (融).

Nawaz Mirajkar is the Head of Percussion of the Singapore Temple of Fine Arts since 1996 and has been playing an active role in representing Singapore in the global arts scene. He was born in to a family of musicians and has been playing the tabla since the age of seven. In Percussion Fusion, he will perform his composition – tabla concerto Soul of Damaru, which is adapted by Sim Boon Yew for this concert. This will be the world premiere of the Chinese Orchestra version of this piece.

Riduan Zalani is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Nadi Singapura. He is also part of numerous local and international performing groups such as Wicked AuraOrkestar Trio and Batucada Sound Machine. Besides being conferred the YAA award in 2015, he was also the recipient of the Singapore Youth Award 2013 and ASEAN Youth Award 2013. He will perform the frame drums in the Singapore premiere of Chang Yungchin’s Within and Beyond.

Twin percussionist brothers, who hail from Tianjin, Gao Chao and Gao Yue, are members of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, Tianjin Musicians’ Association and the Chinese Nationalities Orchestra Society’s percussion professional committee. Their rendition of Bull Battling the Tiger won them the first prize at the Beijing Percussion Competition, and they will be playing this piece in this concert. They will also be performing the Singapore premiere of Wang Danhong’s Heavenly Ford.

Mark Ford’s percussion quintet piece titled Head Talk will be performed by SCO percussion quintet. The SCO percussion section will also be featured alongside SCO in the world premiere of Simon Kong Su Leong’s percussion and orchestra piece titled Drumming in Harmony.
