Singapore, 26 February 2018 (Monday) – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) organises the fourth Composer Workshop on 11 and 12 March 2018, at the newly renovated Singapore Conference Hall. The two-day workshop will be hosted by SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh and Composer-in-Residence Eric Watson. The SCO Composer Workshop 2018 is organized by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and funded by Temasek Foundation Nurtures.

 

On 11 March, three composers, Dr Zechariah Goh Toh Chai, Mr Simon Kong and Dr Chong Kee Yong, are invited to share on three compositional topics. Dr Zechariah Goh Toh Chai will share onthe topic of composing works for smaller Chinese ensembles, Mr Simon Kong will share about the five elements on orchestration of Chinese orchestral music, while Dr Chong Kee Yong will speak on the use of Chinese instruments in his compositions.

 

On 12 March from 9am to 1pm, SCO will host a score-reading session of the new compositions by 8 selected composers. In the afternoon from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, there will be a sharing session to discuss the new compositions performed. Below are the 8 new compositions to be performed at the score-reading session:

Dr Zechariah Goh is a Senior Lecturer of Composition at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and a composer with works ranging from choir, symphonic band, wind ensemble, chamber music to large scale orchestral works. He has intricately fused Southeast Asian-Chinese with Western traditions in his works. Before he embarked on his studies in the United States, he was a familiar face in the local music scene, teaching bands and choirs in Singapore.

 

Mr Simon Kong Su Leong is a Malaysian musician who composes, arranges, conducts, performs, plans and teaches Chinese music. Simon Kong mastered several traditional musical instruments, and has been researching the Chinese “Five Elements” composition and orchestration methods in recent years. His compositions, re-arrangements and orchestration pieces have been played several times in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Europe.

 

Dr Chong Kee Yong is one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary music composers, and possesses one of the most exciting voices in new music today. The uniqueness of his music stems not only from a rich palette of sounds, but his experimentation into traditions, infusing his own Chinese and multi-cultural Malaysian heritage into his work.
