Singapore, 18 May 2018 (Friday) – Liven up your lunch hour with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s Lunchtime Concert – the first in a series to come, as it returns to the SCO Concert Hall in the Singapore Conference Hall – Home of the SCO on 6 June 2018. Conducted by Resident Conductor, Quek Ling Kiong, admission to the concert is free on a first come first serve basis.
Experience a musical tour of Singapore with a programme that introduces landmarks and attractions in Singapore. Get A Glimpse of Singapore through the second movement of Gu Guan Ren’s composition and experience the hustle and bustle of Chinatown in the piece. SCO will bring you to Little India and Geylang Serai through popular Indian and Malay folksongs such as like Paaduvan Vaarungal and Chan Mali Chan, arranged by Sim Boon Yew.
Take a trip down to the zoo with Liu Xing’s Animal Suite and meet the Arrogant Monkey and the Panda that like Dreaming as the orchestra performs two movements from the Suite. Suona Associate Principal Chang Le and Suona Musician Meng Jie will then bring the audience to the Jurong Bird Park through their suona performance of the lively Shandong folk tune Hundreds of Birds Adoring a Phoenix.
Singaporean composer Benjamin Lim Yi’s composition Wonders of Pulau Ubin will bring you on a tour of the island off eastern Singapore, which is often known to many as home to the last kampongs or villages, as well as the Chek Jawa Wetlands. Rounding off the concert would be homegrown composer Wang Chenwei’s work for percussion and orchestra – Kaleidoscopic World of Percussion, to drum up the vibrancy of Singapore.
