Singapore, 21 May 2018 (Monday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will be featuring internationally-renowned sheng master Wu Tong, to illustrate the artistry of the the woodwind instrument – sheng. The concert titled Sounds of the Frontier will be held on 2 June 2018 (Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall. Music Director Tsung Yeh is the conductor and pianist for this concert.
Wu Tong is a multi-talented musician who joined the well-known Silk Road Ensemble in 2000. Beside sheng, he was also formerly the main vocalist from a rock band, Lunhui, which he co-founded in 1992. Wu Tong has performed at multiple festivals, such as the Beijing TV Spring Festival, where he played the sheng and sang Jasminealongside Dimash Kudaibergen. Being a part of the Silk Road Ensemble, Wu Tong and his fellow musicians have achieved wonders, such as receiving a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for their sixth album, Sing Me Home. In this concert, Wu Tong will showcase sheng works composed by him: Sheng and Piano: Faraway Mountain, which he will be performing a duet with Tsung Yeh on the piano; Sheng and Orchestra: Waterway; a duet improvisation of Sheng and Tabla with Singapore tabla virtuoso Nawaz Mirajkar; and two Sheng and Cello Double Concertos with well-known cellist Qin Li-wei titled Spring Wind, a rearrangement from famous Taiwanese song, and Duo.
An exclusive Universal Music China Artist, cellist Qin Li-wei has been awarded prestigious medals such as the Silver Medal at the 11th Tchaikovsky International Competition and the First Prize in the 2001 Namburg Competition in New York.
In this concert, SCO will also perform the Singapore premiere of Wen Zhan Li’s The Encounter and The Forgotten Valley, and Liu Qing’s On The Strings of Yarkand.
