Singapore, 27 August 2018 (Monday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) collaborates with the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) to celebrate Lianhe Zaobao’s 95thanniversary in a concert featuring Singapore and press history through Chinese music, picture archivals and multimedia. The Story of Singapore will be held on 14 and 15 September 2018 (Friday and Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall. This concert will be conducted by Music Director Tsung Yeh. President Halimah Yacob will grace 14 September 2018’s concert as guest-of-honour.

Lianhe Zaobao was established in March 1983 following the merger of two established Chinese newspapers, Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew Jit Poh, and is currently Singapore’s largest Singapore-based and most highly-read Chinese-language newspaper. Lianhe Zaobao provides extensive Singapore and international news coverage on news, business, commentary, sports, lifestyle, technology and media.

The Story of Singapore concert presents a programme inspired by Singapore’s history and press history.

Singaporean young multi-talented composer’s work, The Sisters’ Islands, will kickstart the concert. This is composition inspired by a local legend of the Sisters’ Islands south of Singapore. The fable describes the struggle of the Malay twin sisters Minah and Linah against pirates, their drowning and their transformation into twin islands. Composed by Wang Chenwei at age 17, this piece won the “Singapore Composer Award” at the 2006 Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestra Composition.

This concert will also world premiere two new works by Eric Watson and Law Wai Lun respectively –As The River Flows and The Stories of Singapore – Singapore’s Press History. These two works include photo-choreography which will be projected through multimedia presentation to take the audience through a historical music journey.

Vocalists Allan Moo and Chriz Tong will also be presenting nice pieces with SCO. Chriz Tong will be singing renowned singer-songwriter Chen Jiaming’s The Swallow (如燕), Living by Night (都是夜归人) and Moonlight in The City (城里的月光). Allan Moo will be singing Chen Jiaming’s Loving You Was My Biggest Mistake (爱上你是我一生的错), Gone Too Far (过火) composed by Cao Jun Hong, lyrics by Chen Jiaming; and Foolish Heart (太傻) composed by Eric Moo, lyrics by Chen Jiaming.

Under the music directorship of chorus mistresses Woo Mun Ngan and Fenny Low, the 50-member chorus comprising of SPH Chinese Choir and SOKA Chorus will present Ode to Singapore with SCOa composition by Law Wai Lun with lyrics by Pan Cheng Lui.
