Singapore, 11 October 2018 (Thursday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s favourite Chinese production: Young People’s Concert: Voyage to Nanyang returns with children’s well-loved “Ah De” this November! In this year’s final episode of this Young People’s Concert series, SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong (in the role of “Ah De” in the concert) will take you on a trip down memory lane to share what old days’ Singapore’s multicultural and heartwarming kampong spirit is all about! SCO Young People’s Concert:Voyage to Nanyang V – Balik Kampong will be held on 9 and 10 November 2018 at the SCO Concert Hall.
This concert aims to share with the young audience the uniqueness of every culture and how, despite cultural differences, racial harmony can be maintained from then-kampong days to modern Singapore. Through this concert, SCO aims to share the message of importance in maintaining the multicultural kampong spirit as part of Singapore’s heritage. Voyage to Nanyang V: Balik Kampong concert will be presented in four segments: The Scenic Kampong, Fun at the Kampong, Kampong Tunes, The Kampong Nostalgia.
Gambus musician, Ismahairie Putra, is currently a member of the Singapore Malay Orchestra (Orkestra Melayu Singapura). He has represented Singapore in many overseas music performances such as the ASEAN Youth Camp 2008. Ismahairie is also an active songwriter and arranger.
Venu musician, Raghavendran Rajasekaran, is a multifaceted composer, improviser and performer of the Indian classical flute in Singapore. He has performed at prestigious world ceremonies such as the ASEAN Paralympic Games 2015 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
In the first segment of the concert, The Scenic Kampong, SCO will present a selection of pieces to illustrate the beauty of the village era including Gu Guan Ren’s second movement: Chinatown from A Glimpse of Singapore, Malay Folksong Duo including Burong Kaka Tua and Geylang Sipaku Geylang re-arranged by Sim Boon Yew, and Yii Kah Hoe’s Buka Panggung.
In the second segment, Fun at the Kampong, the concert will present to audience the fun activities during kampong days. Audience can get to hear Soh Kay Cheng’s Ah Lee & Ali, Liong Kit Yeng and Phang Kok Jun’s Street Opera of the Lion City.
In the third segment of the concert, Kampong Tunes, SCO will share Singapore’s multicultural and racial harmony through traditional music and instruments from different races performing together. Audience will get to watch venu musician Raghavendran Rajasekaran will perform Indian classical pieceBho Shambo with SCO dizi musician Tan Chye Tiong, a piece re-arranged by Phang Kok Jun. Gambus musician Ismahairie Putra will partner SCO pipa musician Zhang Yin to world premiere Wang Chenwei new work’s Pelayaran.
In the finale segment, The Kampong Nostalgia, SCO will perform Indonesian folksong Lenggang Kangkung, re-arranged by Chow Jun Yi, and Wang Chenwei’s Confluence to illustrate the harmonious multiracial society Singapore has built and to share the importance of maintaining the ‘kampong’ spirit as part of Singapore’s heritage.
Pre-Concert Activity (10 November 2018 only)
SCO will conduct free and exciting pre-concert activities for ticket holders to reminisce and play old-school games such as five stones, chapteh, hopscotch, goli (marbles), and pick up sticks! Pre-concert activities will start at 1.30pm and 4pm. For ticket holders only.
