Singapore, 27 October 2018 (Saturday) – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will be performing at the West Coast Park, Grand Lawn on 17 November 2018 (Saturday), 6pm. Titled Sing, SCO!, come with your family and friends for an evening of Xinyao(新谣)songs at the SCO Community Concert, proudly sponsored by the Singapore Press Holdings’ SPH Gift of Music Series, in collaboration with the National Arts Council’s Arts in Your Neighbourhood programme; a bi-annual programme that aims to provide enriching arts experience for everyone at their doorsteps. This concert will be conducted by SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, admission is free.
Xinyao, also known as Singapore folk songs, was a movement that was popular in the eighties that produced numerous singers and songs for Singapore, of which, Singapore singer-songwriter Liang Wern Fook was one of them. Sing along with the SCO as the orchestra performs a repertoire of audience’s favourite Xinyao songs from Liang Wern Fook in Liang Wern Fook Hits Medley which includes songs such as Step by Step(一步一步来),Singapore Pie(新加坡派), Friendship Forever(细水长流)and more. Singaporean singer Juni Goh from a cappella band, MICappella, will be singing a medley of songs with the SCO in Waiting Painfully For You(等你等到我心痛), Loving You Too Much(太想爱你)and Love is Eternal(爱是永恒); singer-songwriter Ariane Goh will also perform a medley of familiar television drama theme songs such as Bukit Ho Swee(河水山), Gentle Night(温柔的夜)and Moonlight in the City(城里的月光).
SCO will also perform familiar pieces including Rasa Sayang, a malay folk song rearranged by Chow Jun Yi, Yarkaiyin Kaatchhi which depicts the four different races living together and leading a happy and prosperous life in Singapore, in celebration of multi-culturalism in the country.
Juni and Ariane will also sing a medley together from Xinyao Suite: The Developing Years, rearranged by Chow Jun Yi. The medley consists of two xinyao songs – Like a Little Sparrow Carrying a Twig (麻雀衔竹枝)and A Beautiful Youth(锦绣年华). SCO will also perform a xinyao favourite Voices from the Heart(小人物的心声)at the finale.
The concert is co-organised by the West Coast Community Centre Management Committee and West Coast Community Arts and Culture Club.
