Singapore, 18 December 2018 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s annual branded Chinese New Year concert – Rhapsodies of Spring – returns in 2019 featuring renowned vocalist Fang Qiong. SCO musicians will also be performing Chinese hits with a pop twist in this concert. Rhapsodies of Spring 2019 will be held on 18 and 19 January (Friday and Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall. This concert will be conducted by SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh.
Fang Qiong is a renowned singer and currently a professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She has won many awards, including the Shanghai Yucai award in 2004 which is meant for academics who have made outstanding contributions to higher education, and the Best Female Folk Artist Award in 2010 under the China National Radio and Chinese Musicians’ Association. She has also been constantly invited to perform at shows, and has done so in more than 20 countries in regions such as Europe, North America and Asia. In this concert, she will be performing Symphonic Suite: Song Birdcomposed and re-arranged by composer Law Wai Lun, which comprises of famous singer Zhou Xuan’s classic oldies including The Wandering Songstress, Song of Four Seasons, When Will You Return, River of Peach Blossoms, Breeze in May, Grievances of Love, The Flying Phoenix, and Song of the Songstress.
SCO will present Chinese classic hits with a modern twist. SCO’s gaoyin suona associate principal Chang Le and zhongyin suona musician Meng Jie will perform Simon Kong Su Leong’s Flight of Bossa Nova; erhu associate principal Ling Hock Siang and erhu musician Tan Man Man will perform Phang Kok Jun’s Erquan in Swing, which is a twist ofswing from the classic erhu work Reflection of the Moon on Erquan; pipa principal Yu Jia will present Wang Chen Wei’s Interstellar Ambush, a re-worked piece from the classic pipa work Ambush from All Sides and percussion principal Xu Fan with musician Ngoh Kheng Seng will jointly present Eric Watson’s rock rendition of Bull Battling the Tiger –Hard Rock Fight.
SCO will also perform festive pieces to welcome the Chinese New Year, which will include audience’s all-time favourite Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture, New Year Greetings, rearranged by Law Wai Lun, and Spring Suite 2019 rearranged by Sim Boon Yew.
