Renowned Taiwanese conductor Chen Tscheng-Hsiung straddles the worlds of both Chinese and Western music. He will conduct SCO in this concert with an opening piece of his rearrangement – an opening fanfare of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, a work that originally premiered in 1954 to celebrate the anniversary of the October Revolution. Dizi musician Zeng Zhi will present Taiwanese composer Chung Yiu-kwong’s Whirling Dance followed by Chinese-American composer Han Yong’s Three Realms of Tibet, a piece composed according to ‘Yin-Yang compositional techniques’ and incorporating elements from Tibetan folk music to portray the spiritual interaction between heaven, earth and the human world. Taiwan’s “Voice of the Suona” Tseng Chien-Yun then performs the suona concerto Playing the Lion, by Taiwanese female composer Lu Yun. She demonstrates the festive spectacle of the traditional lion dance in a local festival. Three years ago Chen Tscheng-Hsiung directed the world première of Memories, a large scale warm and touching composition by Liu Chang Yuan – which will indulge you in musical memories and wallow in lingering nostalgia.
