SCO assistant conductor Moses Gay choreographed a selection of great Chinese music for this concert. The Dancing of Golden Snake melody, familiar to all, has been re-rendered by Chinese composer Tang Jian Ping as Overture for the New Century. Masters of Chinese folk music Peng Xiu Wen and Gu Guan Ren have also re-arranged two enduring classics: The Moon on High and The General’s Command. Respectively civil and martial in tone, the two pieces reveal differing but profound artistic moods and grandeur. Meanwhile, the magisterial orchestral masterpiece The Great Wall Capriccioby Liu Wen Jin, together with Romance of Ancient Xi’an by Hong Kong composer Chen Ning-chi will transport you on a tour of historic sites and scenic spots. The recent masterpiece Thoughts of Clouds and Flowers by young Chinese composer Wang Dan Hong, inspired by a segment of a popular Tang dynasty tale of romance, will be performed by the pipa musician Zhang Yin. Erhu musician Tan Man Man will play Chinese composer Wang Jian Min’s Second Erhu Rhapsody.
