Doyenne of the world of Chinese fiddles, Min Hui Fen first made history by winning top prize in the 1963 ‘Shanghai Spring International Music Festival’ erhu competition. Her rendition of River Water once reduced well-known conductor Seiji Ozawa to tears. Min Hui Fen left a music legacy spanning half a century and this concert will retain her spirit of sharing Chinese music and erhu. This concert programme was choreographed by her and her two disciples – Zhao Jian Hua, SCO’s Erhu I Principal and Liu Guang Yu, renowned erhu musician in China – will perform in this concert. Zhao Jian Hua will play Yang Li Qing’s Song of Sadness while Liu Guang Yu will present his composition Ant, Hua Yan Jun’s Reflections of the Moon on Erquan and Min Hui Fen’s famous Aspiration of the Honghu People. Min Hui Fen’s son, Liu Ju, Music Director of the Central Ballet Orchestra, will conduct this concert spanning artistry across generations. Min Hui Fen’s contribution to the erhu and her spirit will remain deeply in our memories.
