SCO music kaleidoscope

Perfect 5th, perfect consonance.

In their relentless quest for perfection, five youthful musicians of Singapore Chinese Orchestra come together to form Perfect 5, a quintet of plucked and bowed strings that seeks to breathe new life into traditional classics and explore new repertoire. As part of their inaugural concert, they will perform their own arrangements of familiar classics like Dance of the Golden Snake, and Longing for the Spring Breeze, while Cultural Medallion recipient Law Wai Lun and Composer-in-Residence Wang Chenwei also lend their talents in new bespoke compositions like Vanda Miss Joaquim, tailor-made for their technical and musical prowess. Special lighting and video production further enhance the music for a scintillating multi-sensory experience.  Get ready for the mesmerizing modern musical maelstrom poised to take the city by storm. . .

The programme brings classics, modern and popular flavours together and is presented in different forms such as solo, duet, trio, quartet and quintet. Programme curator, SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh said, “This plucked and strings quintet is a unique combination, that has not been seen before. The 5 talented ladies will perform local favourites such as Dance of the Golden Snake and Longing for the Spring Breeze, as well newly commissioned work Vanda Miss Joaquim by Composer-in-Residence Wang Chenwei.”

Tsung Yeh also explained that the quintet is versatile, dynamic, and able to perform the traditional classics such as Sound of Emptiness, Poem in Two Parts, Rhyme of Tanci and Farewell at Yangguan Pass, to name a few.

In addition, SCO will be launching a series of ensemble performances in the coming months. SCO Executive Director Terence Ho said, “The formation of these ensembles is initiated by the musicians. Covid allowed us to explore and experiment ensemble-ship with many commissioned repertoires. In a way, SCO is responding to the country’s SMM.   We hope to turn orchestra concerts into opportunities to bring Chinese instrumental music closer to the hearts of our people via the hybrid presentation.”

Catch Perfect 5's charming performance on 10 September 2021 (Fri), 8pm. Watch it digitally on SISTIC Live at $15.
