Singapore, December 23, 2024 — As the new year approaches, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) proudly unveils two highly anticipated concerts in its 2025 Family Series: “Rhapsodies of Spring 2025” and “Destiny.” These performances will not only celebrate the rich diversity of Chinese orchestral music but also blend traditional and contemporary elements, creating a captivating musical experience for audiences of all ages.

 

Rhapsodies of Spring 2025

To welcome the Year of the Snake, SCO’s Principal Conductor, Quek Ling Kiong, will lead the orchestra in a vibrant celebration of the Lunar New Year. Held at the SCO Concert Hall, the concert is hosted by the lively team of radio presenters from MediaCorp CAPITAL 958, adding a unique touch to the festive atmosphere.One of the concert’s highlights is the finale of the popular CAPITAL 958 radio play, Reunion. Audiences can tune in to follow the story on-air, then join the live concert to witness its grand conclusion on stage.

The evening also includes stunning performances by guzheng principal Xu Hui and liuqin musician Zhang Li, who will present two beloved Chinese orchestral classics, Spring on the Xiang River and Spring on at the Yi River. Adding to the celebratory mood, young composer Phang Kok Jun’s Spring in the Lion City will bring vibrant imagery to life through music. The Purple Symphony Choir, led by Chorus Mistress Khor Ai Ming, will further enhance the festive spirit with their delightful Chinese New Year Medley. Together, these performances promise to immerse the audience in the joy and beauty of the spring season.

Destiny

On Valentine’s Day, SCO will present a heartfelt evening of romance and music with “Destiny” concert. Under the baton of Principal Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, the concert will feature erhu soloist Mr Sunny Wong, Head of Chinese Instrumental Studies at NAFA, UAS, and SCO Pipa Principal Yu Jia. Together, they will perform Destiny, by renowned composer Liu Xijin, weaving a tale of love and connection. “Destiny” was specially commissioned by SCO, tailored for Sunny and Yu Jia, and the work was premiered in 1999.

The programme also explores themes of longing and nostalgia, featuring works such as Pining in Blue, Ode to the Sun, Mvt III: A Missing Heart, and Blue Memories – Teresa Teng Golden Hits Medley. The concert will conclude with Bian Ba, composed by Liu Xing. Each piece is designed to guide the audience through a rich tapestry of emotions, from wistful memories to heartfelt connections.

These two concerts aim to strengthen familial and cultural ties through the distinctive allure of Chinese orchestral music, while also adding brilliance to Singapore's cultural landscape.
