Here are tips to navigate concerts like a seasoned concertgoer!
- DRESS CODE
Although you don’t need to dress as if you are attending a dinner at the Istana, you will probably feel more comfortable in smart casual attire. To show respect to the musicians and performers, you should avoid wearing shorts, singlets and slippers. - ENTERING CONCERT HALL AND REMAIN SEATED
Arrive at the concert hall at least five to ten minutes ahead, and settle down before the concert starts. Latecomers will only be admitted during an appropriate pause in the programme. Unless you are giving a standing ovation to the performers after the concert segment, please remain seated otherwise. - SOUND-EMITTING OBJECTS
Before a concert begins, do check to make sure that you have switched your electronic devices to silent or flight mode. Place your plastic shopping bags or paper bags under the chair if you have brought them along. Concert halls are designed to amplify the smallest of noises, so please avoid talking or rustle plastic sweet wrappers or paper bags during the performance. - SHOW APPRECIATION BY CLAPPING OR A STANDING OVATION WITH SHOUTS OF “BRAVO” ONLY AFTER THE WORK IS COMPLETED
Please hold your applause between movements in a multi-movement work. It is customary to wait until the entire work is completed before clapping, to shower performers with applause and love. As a quick guide, the conductor will turn to face the audience as a cue for applause. If the conductor continues to face the orchestra, the music is not yet completed.
