SCMC 2022

Organised by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) was previously known as the National Chinese Music Competition. The biennale competition was first organised by the National Arts Council (NAC) in 1998 after the restructuring of the former National Music Competition which was under the auspices of the then Ministry of Culture in the 1980s. The 1st edition of SCMC held in 2020.

Solo Section

SOLO SECTION – JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE & SENIOR CATEGORIES

 Participants may choose to compete in any of the following instruments : 

Dizi, Sheng, Suona, Erhu, Guzheng, Pipa, Yangqin and Zhongruan.

There are three age categories for each solo instrument:

  • Junior – 12 years & below (born in or after 2010)
  • Intermediate – 18 years & below (born in or after 2004)
  • Senior – 35 years & below (born in or after 1987)
  • The Junior and Intermediate categories are open to Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) only.
  • The Senior Category is open to Singapore citizens, PRs and foreigners studying, working or residing in Singapore.

Due to the re-grouping of the age categories in the 2006 National Chinese Music Competition, First Prize winners of the previous National Chinese Music Competitions may enter the following age categories this year (age limit still applies to each category) :

SOLO SECTION – GRAND CATEGORY

•     This category is to provide an opportunity for outstanding soloists who wish to showcase their virtuosity in the performance of Chinese musical instruments on a competitive platform.  

•     Musicians who are currently or previously employed by a performing or music educational institution on a full-time basis, and who have graduated from any local or overseas music institution are welcome to participate in the Grand category. 

•     The soloist may perform in any type of Chinese musical instruments from the String, Plucked-string and Wind sections. Please refer to the list of Chinese musical instruments here.

•    The Grand category is open to Singapore citizens, PRs and foreigners studying, working or residing in Singapore.

•    No age limit.

Ensemble Section

ENSEMBLE SECTION

  • The ensemble may perform in any combination of Chinese musical instruments. This may vary as required by the instrumentation of the chosen pieces. Please refer to the list of musical instruments here.

There are two age categories for the Ensemble section:

  • A – 18 years & below (born in or after 2004)
  • B – No age limit
  • The Ensemble Section is open to Singapore citizens, PRs and foreigners studying, working or residing in Singapore.
  • Each ensemble shall consist of a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 20 members. All members must be officially registered for the Competition.
  • Each ensemble must perform without a conductor and playing in unison is not allowed.

Junior & Intermediate Categories

Preliminary Round: 

  • Participants are to perform one set piece. 
  • Participants must perform the set pieces according to the scores provided by the Organiser.

Finals: 

  • Finalists are to perform two pieces of their choice without accompaniment.
  • The pieces should be contrasting in mood and style, and should not include any piece performed in the Preliminary Round.
  • All choice pieces submitted for the competition should not be rearrangements and/or adaptations of Western or non-Chinese music.
  • The total performance time must not exceed the following duration (including breaks between pieces):

Junior Category    10 minutes

Intermediate Category    15 minutes

Senior Category

Preliminary Round: 

  • Participants are to perform one set piece.
  • Participants must perform the set pieces according to the scores provided by the Organiser.

Finals: 

  • Finalists are to perform one set concerto with piano accompaniment.
  • Finalists must perform the set concerto according to the scores provided by the Organiser.
  • Finalists are required to make arrangement for their own accompanists.

The piano will be provided by the Organiser and shall stay in the same position for all participants of the same instrument category.

Grand Category 

Preliminary Round: 

  • Participants are to submit a video of their performance consisting one piece of their choice between 7 to 10mins, performed from memory without an accompaniment. 
  • The video must be filmed with the participant’s face and hand in the frame at all times with minimal background interruption.
  • Video must not be filmed more than six months prior to submission. 
  • Participants are not allowed to edit their video in any way.
  • The video should be encoded in MP4 format, with at least 720p
  • The video must be submitted through email to scmc2022@sco.com.sg by 25 July 2022. It is recommended for participants to provide a link for the Organiser to download the video through 3rd party websites (e.g. Dropbox, google drive etc.).

Semi-final Round: 

  • Semi-finalists are to perform one piece of their choice with piano accompaniment.
  • The choice piece must not exceed 12 minutes. The choice piece should not include music pieces performed in the Preliminary and Finals Round.
  • Semi-finalists are required to make arrangement for their own accompanists. 

Piano will be provided by the Organiser, and shall stay in the same position for all participants of the same instrument category. 

Finals: 

  • Finalists are to perform one concerto, less than 20 minutes, of their choice with orchestra accompaniment by SCO
  • Finalists can select their choice concerto from the list provided by the Organiser or their own source. If the finalists choose to perform a concerto not within the list provided by the Organiser, the finalist must submit the full score of his/her choice concerto and to be approved by the organiser. 
  • Recommended concerti are only listed for the musical instruments including Dizi, Suona, Sheng, Erhu, Guzheng, Yangqin, Pipa & Zhongruan. 

All choice pieces submitted for the competition should not be rearrangements and/or adaptations of Western or non-Chinese music.

ADJUDICATION

A panel of Singapore and international adjudicators will judge in the Competition.

The Adjudicating Panel reserves the right to interrupt and/or stop a participant’s performance at any time of the Competition.

The first, second and third prize winners will be determined at the Finals of the respective age/instrumental categories.

The preliminary round for Solo Section – Grand Category, will be conducted via blind listening of the submitted recordings. This process is audited independently and the decision of the Adjudicating Panel is final. The video dimension of the recording is to ensure the authenticity of the submission. Only participants who enter the semi-finals and finals will proceed to the live performance rounds.

The Adjudicating Panel reserves the right to award, or not award any prizes as they deem fit. 

The Adjudicating Panel’s decision is final and no appeal or correspondence will be entertained.
