Singapore, 29 April 2024 (Monday) – Global real estate company Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree” or “the Group”) will present its annual community outreach concert series “SCO Goes to VivoCity” on 25 May 2024, at 5.00pm and 7.30pm at VivoCity Amphitheatre. This is the third consecutive collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (“SCO”), the Republic’s only full-time professional Chinese orchestra.
Under the baton of SCO Associate Conductor, Moses Gay, more than 40 musicians will come together as one to perform compositions embodying youthful passion, including Aspirations 《展望》and For Our Dreams《逐梦》by Composer-in-Residence Wang Chenwei, Expressions at Qinchuan 《秦川抒怀》, and Overture《青年序曲》by 2017 Cultural Medallion recipient Law Wai Lun. SCO will also captivate audiences with highly popular Chinese pop tunes from the medley King of Romantic Hits《 情歌王》.

The first edition in 2022 saw the attendance of over 800 audience members, and in 2023, the concert was expanded to two shows where over 1,400 people were able to enjoy the performance. There will also be two shows held this year following the success of previous editions.

Founded in 1997, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is Singapore’s only full-time professional Chinese orchestra. Led by Principal Conductor Quek Ling Kiong since 2023, it is known for its excellence in traditional Chinese music and unique Singapore flavour.
The SCO makes its home at the Singapore Conference Hall, and has toured major cities in Asia and Europe, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Gwangju and Berlin. The orchestra made history when Butterfly Lovers, recorded with award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, broke into the Top 20 in Britain’s classical music charts in 2023.

Singapore, 20 April 2023 (Thursday) – SCO’s collaboration with Mapletree continues for the second year. For the second time, Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree” or “the Group”) is presenting a live performance at VivoCity Amphitheatre by Singapore Chinese Orchestra (“SCO”). On the back of last year’s overwhelming turnout, this year’s concert, SCO Goes To VivoCity will run for two days instead of one.
Proudly presented by Mapletree, the concert will be held on 26 and 27 May 2023 at 7.30pm. Led by SCO Associate Conductor, Moses Gay, more than 30 musicians will perform a potpourri of classic hits and melodies of yesteryear that are bound to tug at heartstrings of the audience. Some of these nostalgic tunes include familiar favourites, “The Dagger Society Suite” 《小刀会组曲-序曲》and “Summer Night” 《夏之夜》, as well as familiar TV melodies and Pop music tracks, “Medley of Television Drama Theme Songs” 《电视主题曲联奏》and “Medley of Singapore Chinese Pop” 《华彩飞扬》.

新加坡，2022年11月8日（星期二）- 今年，新加坡华乐团欢庆音乐总监葉聰在乐团任职20年，这意义非凡的里程碑。为纪念这个特别日子，乐团将呈献一场特别的音乐会，带着观众一同踏上时光机，回忆葉聰辉煌的20年。葉聰自 2002年1月起出任新加坡华乐团的音乐总监。在他的领导下，新加坡华乐团迅速拓展其演奏曲目，并创造了别具一格的世界级华乐团。
这场名为《葉聰20》的音乐会将呈献三首对葉聰和乐团来说，承载着特殊历史意义的曲目。
三部著作
《葉聰20》音乐会所呈献的三首曲目包括《海——生命之源》、《海上第一人——郑和》以及《马可波罗与卜鲁罕公主》。
首先，《海——生命之源》是于2007年新加坡国庆典礼上首演的作品，由新加坡文化奖得主埃里克·沃森（Eric Watson）作曲。葉聰为当年国庆典礼的音乐总监，他为这个举国欢腾的庆典节目作了全新和大胆的音乐设计，那就是让新加坡华乐团、新加坡交响乐团、马来和印度乐队、南音小组，以及合唱团同台演出，同时指挥这个联合乐团。这也是新加坡史上第一次，目前来说也是最后一次汇集本国三大顶级乐团同台演出。这首曲子展现了水对新加坡的生存和成长的意义、丰富多彩及具富有生命力的海洋象征着和谐共存的新加坡多元种族。
接着上演的就是《海上第一人——郑和》。这首曲子由新加坡文化奖得主罗伟伦所作，并于2005年新加坡艺术节上首演。这部曲主要是纪念郑和下西洋的600周年纪念，以多元艺术形式结合的大型华乐交响史诗。作品将传统和流行的元素巧妙地融合在一起，深受观众爱戴。
音乐会的压轴曲就是《马可波罗与卜鲁罕公主》，由中国著名作曲家刘湲所作，于2002年滨海艺术中心开幕首演。这部作品可谓葉聰非常满意和重视的作品。2002年是葉聰担任新加坡华乐团音乐总监的第一年，而这也是他所收到的第一个大型项目，所以他当时抱着“只许成功”的心态来处理。这部作品的灵感来自于他在飞机上阅读《国家地理》杂志的一篇文章。故事内容讲述关于意大利旅行家马可·波罗与卜鲁罕公主从中国返回家乡的过程。葉聰深受启发，写出了两人间的爱情故事，并委约了刘湲依照这个故事来创作一部乐曲。根据记载，马可·波罗在中国生活了17年。在1291年至1292年期间，他受蒙古国王忽必烈委托，护送即将远嫁的卜鲁罕公主到波斯，马可·波罗一行人借此终于得以离开中国。那时，陆路已经燃起了战火，所以去波斯只能取水路而行，这样，途经东南亚一带，曾经路过新加坡。
关于葉聰
葉聰于2002年加入新加坡华乐团，担任音乐总监一职。他当时也是美国南湾交响乐团音乐总监。担任两个乐团的音乐总监不容易，这对他的身体和家庭生活带来了很大的影响。为此，他于2016年决定将重心放在新加坡华乐团，离开服务了28年的美国南湾交响乐团。当他卸任后，荣获印第安纳州州长颁发的印地安纳州最高平民奖 “Sagamore of the Wabash Award”。此外，南弯市市长也宣布2016年5月7日为“Tsung Yeh Day”（葉聰日）。他也是全球首位同时在交响乐团和华乐团担任音乐总监的指挥。
有了中西乐的知识背景，加上对新加坡本土文化的了解，葉聰精心打造出属于乐团自己，融汇中西，富有南洋特色的独特声音。在过去的20年，他把新加坡华乐团带到国际舞台，扬名海外。葉聰于2013年10月，荣获文化界最高荣誉的 “新加坡文化奖” 。
葉聰对音乐不灭的热忱使他能够不断带来新突破。2022年，他指挥了《MEPAAN》并策划了《破晓》，两场即前卫又富有艺术气息的音乐会。《MEPAAN》音乐会是一场能够带观众到一趟走进细致的精神与文化泉源的声音与视觉之旅。这部制作将东南亚岛国原住民的音乐和人声编织入乐，似在见证盛大的民族仪式现场，让纯粹的心灵犹如走进原始的热带雨林境地。音乐会于巴西班让发电厂上演。《破晓》则是一场诉说着古代神话哲学故事的音乐会。结合多媒体投影的科技，每篇乐章将聚焦不同器乐声部的演奏，诉说苍天、人类和文明的故事。
时光荏苒，光阴似箭！新加坡华乐团音乐总监葉聰与华乐团携手并肩，在音乐道路上砥砺前行不觉已二十载！在这过去的二十年中，葉聰与我们一起奏乐、一起鼓掌、一起欢呼，一起流泪。今年十一月，让我们一起回味那些年的大制作，倾力重现20年来他最难忘的经典曲目！新加坡华乐团将呈献2007年国庆庆典上首演的《海 — 生命之源》、2005年新加坡艺术节首演的《海上第一人 — 郑和》，及2002年滨海艺术中心开幕式上首演的《马可波罗与卜鲁罕公主》，唤醒目睹了这20年本地华乐发展的观众们内心深处的回忆，更见葉聰与新加坡华乐团相辅相成的关系与坚不可摧的情谊！

新加坡，2022 年10 月8 日（星期六） – 阔别两年，新加坡华乐团于2022年10月7日于丽思卡尔顿美年酒店大宴会厅（Grand Ballroom, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore）举办了以管子为主题的筹款晚宴暨音乐会《管韵献新声》，并筹得94万6500元。新加坡华乐团的筹款晚宴暨音乐会是乐团最大型的筹款活动，所筹得的款项将善用于补助新加坡华乐团的发展和营运开销之一。所筹获的94万6500元将能获得文化、社区及青年部文化艺术基金一元对一元的配对（Cultural Matching Fund）。当晚出席的主宾是新加坡华乐团赞助人，李显龙总理。宴会嘉宾包括文化、社区及青年部兼社会及家庭发展部高级政务次长蔡瑞隆，以及各大企业的领袖和代表，和对艺术活动不遗余力地捐款人士。
李显龙总理于献词分享了新加坡华乐团五人小组在今年8月受邀到欧洲德国，与纽伦堡交响乐团一同参与 Klassik Open Air”的系列演出，在7万5千名来自德国或欧洲各地的观众展献各华乐乐器，将新加坡华乐团的独有音乐发扬光大，让优雅华乐，举世共赏。新加坡华乐团能取得今日的成就，捐款人士与赞助商是功不可没的。
身为新加坡华乐团筹委会主席的吴作栋夫人在献词中感谢捐款人士慷慨支持乐团：“我真诚感谢各位捐款人对新加坡华乐团多年的支持，依旧如此热心参与我们的筹款活动，对乐团是极大的鼓舞。各位的不懈支持和捐助让新加坡华乐团得以达成其社会和艺术使命，不仅在新加坡，甚至在海外也同样能展翅高飞，更上一层楼。”
今晚所筹得的捐款来自多位捐款人士以及各大机构。嘉宾们不仅能品尝到五道美味的中西合并式晚餐，也能大饱耳福，欣赏新加坡华乐团在音乐总监葉聰指挥下演奏多首悦耳动听的曲目。今年是新加坡华乐团创团26年，也是第18次举办筹款晚宴暨音乐会。2022年对乐团也别具意义，是葉聰以音乐总监的身份带领新加坡华乐团的第二十载。
今晚的主题是由筹委会主席吴作栋夫人、成员石慧宁女士与梁利安女士的领导下而定下的。乐团每年以一件华乐乐器为主题筹备整场晚宴与音乐会节目。《管韵献新声》，顾名思义今年的主题是源自西域的管子。乐团为捐款人士和机构特制了精美的管子乐器模型。这个模型是由上海民族乐器一厂赞助，并在晚宴上由李总理颁发以表谢意。
管是一种双簧管乐，它的音色浑厚，极具感染力，可表现悲愤或激昂的情绪。要掌握管的演奏并不容易，也正为此，学习管的青年不比其他管乐乐器来的多。透过精心安排的节目，乐团希望能为嘉宾展现管的独特魅力。
新加坡华乐团于晚餐后，为观众带来演出。掀开帷幕的是由罗伟伦编曲的华乐合奏“心中的歌 -《小人物的心声–家》”，以歌曲联奏的形式，再次奏响这两首新加坡家喻户晓的音调，希望新加坡人，无论何时何刻都要“点燃希望”、“贡献一份微薄的力量”、“一起登陆理想”。罗伟伦获颁2017年文化奖，也是新加坡华乐团的两届驻团作曲家（2012-2014年、2018-2020年），为华乐创作了许多佳作。
随后，乐团继续在音乐总监葉聰的指挥下，演奏由靳世义作曲、王辰威配器的管四重奏《西出阳关》。将由靳世义、张硕、孟杰、常乐用传统管、新管、中音和低音加键管及唢呐、还有人声、Rap一同呈献。新管是靳世义与刘江共同研发的新型吹管乐器，保留了传统管的指法、技法、吹法，目的是将已经很少人学习的流传了1600多年的传统管发扬传承下去，因为新管很容易吹奏，易于传播。“新管”的英文拼写为“SINGuan”，语帶双关，既是指“在新加坡研发的管”，也是指“新研发的吹管乐器。目前新管已传播到香港台湾中国各地。靳世义表示，希望新管能吸引到更多人学习，将管的演奏传承下去，生生不息。
管子独奏曲《小开门》是一首河北传统民间乐曲的集成曲，旋律明快朴实，运用了活泼的滑音技巧，充满乡土气息。王辰威编配的乐队伴奏加入了种类丰富的和声色彩，采用了爵士和弦、四度和弦、平行和声及半音阶进行，却又保留了原曲的个性。
为了感谢所有捐款人和资助人的支持，吴作栋夫人亲自在新加坡华乐团与葉聰的指挥下献唱两部名曲《乘着歌声的翅膀, 作品34之2》与《青藏高原》，再以优美的《一杯美酒》为晚宴划下句点。新加坡华乐团诚意感谢所有捐款及赞助新加坡华乐团这届筹款晚宴的机构和人士。各位的慷慨捐助将协助华乐团实现展望，成为新加坡出类拔萃，别具一格的乐团，完成推广优雅华乐，举世共赏的使命和继续追求卓越表现，发挥团队精神和不断学习，取得更优越的艺术造诣。

Singapore, 21 June 2022 – With the launch of the first-ever Chinese Orchestral Digital Archives, researchers, scholars, musicians and the general public can now access over 20 years of Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s (SCO) concerts, music compositions and information on the development of Chinese music scenes and commissions. When completed in 2023, the Archives will have more than 2,000 Chinese orchestral resources.
Also announced on this World Music Day is a series of SCO performances and educational outreach to make Chinese orchestral music more accessible, nurture an appreciation of the beauty of ageless classics as well as Singapore-influenced or Southeast Asian music elements works, and bring communities together through performances. These 2022 initiatives are supported by Temasek Foundation, who has been partnering SCO since 2011 in its mission to forge greater orchestra music excellence and connect with more people in Singapore and beyond through music.

The five-year digital archives was first kickstarted in 2019 to collect, organise and preserve SCO’s archival records. It electronically documents SCO concert materials, compositions and commissions as part of archiving and preserving SCO’s legacy, and provides open access for researchers, scholars, musicians, and the public to know more about SCO and the development of Chinese orchestral music in Singapore. The collection is now being made available online and will continue to expand in phases:

[1] Kahchun Wong made headlines by winning the first prize at the 5th Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2016, followed by his stint as Chief Conductor at Nuremberg Symphony Conductor from 2018 to August 2022. He assumed the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic from the 2021/2022 season, and will begin his appointment as the Chief Conductor in 2023.
Singapore, 5 May 2022 (Thursday) – For the first time, Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree” or “the Group”) is presenting a live performance at VivoCity Amphitheatre by Singapore Chinese Orchestra (“SCO”). The concert, which will feature more than 30 musicians on stage, is titled SCO Goes To VivoCity. It will be held at the mall’s open-air Amphitheatre on 28 May 2022, 7.30pm.

Journey down memory lane with Singapore Chinese Orchestra as they go to VivoCity this May!
Proudly presented by Mapletree, the concert will bring you a potpourri of classic hits and melodies of yesteryear that are bound to tug at your heartstrings. Under the baton of SCO Associate Conductor, Moses Gay, revel in a diverse repertoire of nostalgic tunes, including familiar favourites, “Thunder Storm and Drought” 《旱天雷》, “The Past Can Only be Remembered” 《往事只能回味》 and “Nocturne to Victoria Harbour” 《维港夜曲》.
Tickets to the concert are available for purchase via Peatix. The concert will run from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on 28 May 2022, at the VivoCity Amphitheatre. Although the concert is free seating, individuals are to refrain from intermingling and are required to be fully vaccinated except for children under 12 years old.

Singapore, 29 July 2021 (Thursday) – Come celebrate National Day with Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) on 6 August 2021 (Friday), 12pm at the SCO Concert Hall. As part of the SPH Gift of Music Series sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings Foundation, the home-grown Chinese orchestra will be presenting A Musical Gift “Unmasked”《罩不住的琴艺深深》- an exciting line-up of familiar patriotic favourites, Xinyao classics and new inspirations.
Programme curator, SCO Resident conductor Quek Ling Kiong shared about his inspiration behind the theme of the concert. He said, “I still remember the Chinese character 罩 (“mask” in Chinese) was picked by readers in Word of the Year 2020 (字述一年), organized by SPH’s Chinese flagship Daily Lianhe Zaobao. I have always kept it in my innovation booklet, where I collect my ideas for programming and creative thoughts.” He highlighted that it was a good reflection of how this habit of wearing a mask, an important part of our daily lives, has already been deeply marked in everyone’s minds and hearts. “Although we can mask up to keep safe, the therapeutic power and the beauty of music cannot be masked or hidden away from us. It is with this passion and belief that SCO continues to share our music to all of you.”
This concert is SPH's musical gift to the nation in celebration of Singapore's 56th National Day. Don your most glamorous red and white outfit, and come in anticipation of a jubilant yet heart-warming afternoon as we celebrate our nation’s birthday, with the captivating sounds of Chinese orchestral music! While the concert is free admission, interested audience members are required to get their free tickets on SISTIC platform. The free tickets are available on a first-come-first-served basis on SISTIC starting Wednesday (28 July 2021). The concert is currently limited to 50 audience members and will also be live-streamed on SCO and SPH’s Facebook pages at 12pm on 6 August.
Listen to the beautiful elements of Singapore’s vibrant multi-cultural landscape as the concert commence with Power Singapura《动力狮城》, composed by Quek Ling Kiong and local young composer Phang Kok Jun. This piece draws its musical influences from the percussion music of multi-culture in Singapore. Though seemingly distinctive at first, these musical materials are seamlessly interconnected within the piece, and are unified with a vibrant rhythmic display.
Familiar Xinyao favourites in Xinyao Medley《摇摇新谣》are bound to tug at your heartstrings. Arranged by Sim Boon Yew, this medley includes Swing the Folk《摇摇民谣》, One Step At A Time《一步一步来》, Since the Day You Looked Back 《从你回眸那天开始》, A Song For You《写一首歌给你》, as well as Friendship Forever《细水长流》, the most representative piece written and composed by Liang Wern Fook lauding one’s ability to strive on against all odds. This will be the highlight for fans of Xinyao, a popular music movement that blossomed in Singapore in the 1980s.
SCO will also present Three Short Malay Pieces, composed by local young composer Chow Junyi. This piece consists of three short Malay songs including Ikan Kekek, Burung Kakak Tua and Rasa Sayang. It is a wonderful recreation of the familiar tunes into chamber music for a Chinese bowed strings ensemble, seemingly refreshing, enchanting and delightful. In addition, a lively ballad titled Rain 《雨》, composed by Cao Wengong will also be presented.
In conjunction with this National Day season, SCO will go on to showcase patriotic tunes well-loved by Singaporeans, such as Flavours@SG 《家园@SG》, arranged by local young composer Liong Kit Yeng. This piece consists of a medley of Singapore community songs, including Rasa Sayang, Munnaeru Vaalibaa, My Homeland 《我的家园》and Home.
Audience members can also enjoy Trains of Thoughts, composed by local young composer Phang Kok Jun. The composer wrote this piece exploring how individual lines of music could come together to create music, akin to how fragments of thoughts could be combined to construct new ideas and directions. This segment features sound artist Evan Tan, where a collage of sounds in Singapore will be played while the orchestra performs. Lastly, the concert will conclude with Our Singapore, composed by Dick Lee, rearranged by Phang Kok Jun, and originally performed by the well-loved home-grown international star JJ Lin.

Singapore, 9 October 2020 (Friday) – For the first time in 16 years, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will be doing a Virtual Fundraising Gala Concert. This marks a fresh beginning, a significant change from our usual Fundraising Gala Dinner & Concerts in hotel ballrooms. The Covid-19 pandemic took the world by storm, and almost brought the world to a halt. Despite this adversity, it does not stop musicians from creating music, lifting spirits in such tumultuous times.
The Virtual Fundraising Gala Concert will be held on 23 October 2020 (Saturday), 7.30pm. The duration is approximate 60 minutes long. This year is also SCO’s 24th year since inception and 17th Fundraising Gala Concert. The highlight of the night will be the Zoom live-streaming of SCO performance at SCO Concert Hall at 8pm. Conducted by SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh, sit back and relax, as 23 SCO musicians present an evening of flowing joy and energy.
This exclusive event will be open to invited guests and donors. Donate a minimum sum of $500 to attend this Virtual Fundraising Gala Concert. Donations will receive dollar-for-dollar matching grants from Cultural Matching Fund set up by Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). We thank our donors for their generosity and support, especially during this difficult period.
Like previous years, for donations $10,000 and above, donors will receive an exclusive souvenir token. For this year’s Virtual Fundraising Gala Concert, SCO will be featuring the instrument yueqin (月琴). Singapore, 24 July 2019 (Wednesday) — Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will premiere renowned composer Zhao Jiping’s new masterwork, The Feng Ya Song Symphony, in Singapore. Conducted by Music Director Tsung Yeh, The Feng Ya Song Symphony concert will be held on 3 August 2019 (Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall. Zhao Jiping, as a composer, professor, doctoral tutor, at present holds the position of the president of Chinese Musicians Association. Over the years, Zhao has created a host of excellent music works, which embraces repertoires such as symphonic poem ‘Farewell My Concubine’ and symphonic suite ‘Courtyard of Family Qiao’.
The Feng Ya Song Symphony, which is commissioned by the China Federation of Literary Art Circles and Chinese Musicians’ Association, comprises of five movements. SCO will perform The Feng Ya Song Symphony’s complete five movements, namely Prelude—Ode, Guan Ju, Mythical Bird, Melody of the Secluded Orchid and Guo Feng. Composer Zhao has great appreciation towards the Chinese culture and claimed responsibility for culture composition. Acquiring from the archaic accumulated poetries, the Classic of Poetry, and Tang poetry, the representative chapters have its unique ethnic music language and comprise of different ways in expressing salutation towards the illustrious Chinese culture.
SCO will also perform Enjott Schneider’s exuberant work – Earth and Fire, a sheng concerto, with sheng master, Wu Wei. Wu Wei will also travel with SCO to perform this work in Italy on 6 September and in Greece on 9 September. Wu Wei studied the sheng instrument at the Shanghai Music Conservatory in 1992. In 1995, Wu Wei obtained a DAAD scholarship and studied at the Hans Eisler Music Academy in Berlin, where he is now based. Wu Wei was also a Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
This concert is suited for Chinese Cultural lovers who can experience how Chinese poems influence music composition. Zhao Jiping, Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Musicians' Association will also be giving a pre-concert talk on 3 August 2019 (Saturday), from 6pm to 7.30pm, at Singapore Conference Hall. He will be sharing his thoughts on the piece The Feng Ya Song Symphony and his composition journey. Admission is free.

Singapore, 17 July 2019 (Wednesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) chamber music concert Music Tuesdays: Ballad and Dance wows audiences with 4 pieces of music which will be performed in Singapore for the very first time. Meticulously planned and crafted by SCO Huqin musician Yuan Qi, together with SCO musicians, they will be performing on 23 July 2019 (Tuesday), 7.30pm, at the SCO Concert Hall.
First launched in 2018, Music Tuesdays is a series of concerts held on Tuesday nights for audience to experience an intimate chamber concert with colleagues and friends to gather and chill out after a work day.
Out of the five works, four will be performed in Singapore for the very first time, namely: Probe the West Wind, Cloud Herding, Breathe II and Like A Song and Dance. Yuan Qi, the programme curator said: “In this concert, every instrument plays an important role and every musician has a lot to deliver. The process of performing is very interesting; the synergy between the different musicians and their instruments, and the collision of music will bring forth inspirations and sparks! I look forward to the dialogue between the musicians and the portrayal of the compositions, and hopefully the audiences can anticipate an exciting performance.”
Probe the West Wind, composed by Zhou Juan, is a trio bagatelle music piece written for the Erhu, Gaoyin Sheng, and Double Bass, which will be performed by Yuan Qi, Kevin Cheng Ho Kwan and Zhang Hao. Cloud Herding will be performed by Lee Jun Cheng (Dizi), Yuan Qi (Erhu), Han Ying (Zhongruan) and Zhong Zhiyue (Guqin). Breathe II will be conducted by SCO’s Assistant Conductor Moses Gay, performed by Yuan Qi (Erhu), Lee Jun Cheng (Dizi), Kevin Cheng Ho Kwan (Sheng), Zhang Yin (Pipa) and Qu Jianqing (Yangqin). Last but not least, Like a Dance fromfrom the second movement of Like A Song and Dance will be performed by Yuan Qi (Erhu), Zhang Yin (Pipa), Qu Jianqing (Yangqin) and Han Ying (Zhongruan). The musicians will engage in a post-concert chat with audience after the concert.

Singapore, 2 July 2019 (Tuesday) – July is a month of many firsts for the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO). After a successful lunchtime concert at Mapletree Business City, the SCO Community Concert performs at Boon Keng for the very first time! Also known as the People’s Orchestra, the SCO has since brought her distinctive sound out of the concert hall, to the people, for the people. On 6 July 2019 (Saturday), 7.30pm, join SCO resident conductor Quek Ling Kiong at Boon Keng for Music in Harmony. Admission to the concert is free.
The concert will open with Singaporean composer Wang Chenwei’s Confluence, which expresses the rich local colours of Singapore through the fusion of Indian and Malay tunes – performed on Chinese instruments; portraying the vibrancy and harmonious coexistence of Singapore’s four main ethnic groups. The SCO will also perform Like a Swallow（如燕）, theme song to the popular television drama series The Little Nyonya which revolves the lives of a Peranakan family in Malacca, arranged by Tan Kah Yong.
In this concert, the SCO collaborates with Sriwana, one of Singapore’s oldest surviving Malay performing arts group in the local arts scene to perform Law Wai Lun’s Sixth Movement: The Vow from Admiral of the Seven Seas（海上第一人-郑和 之 海誓）. The SCO will also perform Nawaz Mirajkar’s composition, Soul of Damaru（达姆如之魄）, rearranged by Sim Boon Yew. In this work, audiences are in for a treat as we see a fusion of the tabla and bansuri together with the Chinese orchestra by Nawaz Mirajkar and the Swarhythm Ensemble – a group of multiracial talented musicians based in Singapore. Together with a group of talented musicians, the Ensemble brings together the rich melodies and rhythms of India weaved in with beautiful Chinese and exciting Spanish elements.
The SCO will also perform 2 of Peng Xiuwen’s arrangements Algerian folk song Damu Damu（达姆达姆） and Chinese orchestra evergreen work Rousing Clouds Chasing the Moon（彩云追月）. The concert will conclude with Wang Chenwei’s composition Kaleidoscopic World of Percussion（敲敲打打万花筒).
This concert is part of the Kallang Arts Treats, a programme under National Arts Council’s Arts and Culture Nodes Network. The National Arts Council’s island-wide network of arts and culture nodes is developed for people to come together to participate in, enjoy, and experience the value of arts in their neighbourhood. This Arts and Culture Node is in partnership with the People’s Association and the Whampoa Community Arts and Culture Club.

Singapore, 18 June 2019 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) presents DRUMatic Fusion, a concert showcasing internationally-renowned musicians in collaboration with SCO. Conducted by SCO Music Director, Tsung Yeh, this concert features percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and Chinese percussion twin brothers, Gao Chao and Gao Yue. This concert will be held on 12 & 13 July 2019 (Friday & Saturday), 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. President Halimah Yacob will grace as guest-of-honour on 12 July 2019’s concert.
World renowned percussionist phenomenon, Dame Evelyn Glennie returns to perform with SCO, since her last performance with the orchestra in September 2015. She is notably recognized as the first musician to maintain a full-time career as a solo percussionist.
Although Evelyn Glennie is hearing-impaired, with the aid of her first percussion teacher, she has honed her awareness of sound. As a musician, composer, public speaker, presenter and advocate for humanitarian causes, Evelyn Glennie collaborates with a wide spectrum of diverse artists on projects that foreground artistic vision and innovation. She shares her mission to ‘Teach the World to Listen’. Evelyn Glennie will perform Born to Beat Wild, Op. 30, and play with two, four and six-mallet in the lively Prism Rhapsody, which will deliver an exhilarating music experience.
The concert also features well-known Chinese percussion twin brothers, Gao Chao and Gao Yue. Originally from Tianjin, the duo returns to perform with SCO since their last performance with the orchestra in January 2018. Gao Chao and Gao Yue will charm the audiences with a piece named Heavenly Ford, a beautiful piece that depicts the customs of Tianjin. Using the rich tone and expression of percussion, the piece is divided into four movements: the first movement Jinmen mainly features Chinese big drums to represent the up and downs experienced by the city. The second movement Yangliuqing consists of keyboard percussion instruments such as vibraphones and marimbas to reflect its beautiful scenery of willows and spring festival culture. The third movement Goubuli is mainly performed by the percussion in operatic music to highlight the population’s amusing and optimistic character. The fourth movement 18th Street is performed together with a variety of drums to express its rich culture and charm associated with a contemporary society that is developing rapidly.
Be thrilled by this piece, Dragon Leaps to the East, as this piece kickstarts the concert. SCO will also perform the Third movement: The Green Field of Red Sorghum. Last but not least, the three percussionists will perform together the magnificent finale piece by Kuan Nai-chung, the First movement: The Sun from The New Millennium of the Dragon Year. A percussion fiesta with a burst of east and west, it is the must-see of the season!
In addition, there will be a pre-concert talk by percussionists Gao Chao and Gao Yue. More exciting details will be confirmed at a later date.

Singapore, 17 June 2019 (Monday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will perform a Lunchtime Concert at Mapletree Business City’s (MBC) Plaza, as part of Mapletree Investments’ “Arts in the City” series of performances. The SCO Lunchtime Concert at MBC, conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, will be on 3 July 2019 (Wednesday) from 12.30pm – 1.30pm.
SCO will perform a selection of familiar tunes including Take Me Home, Country Road, Sway and the David Tao favourite – Moon Over My Heart（月亮代表谁的心）, a twist on the Teresa Teng hit song The Moon Represents My Heart（月亮代表我的心）, of which, SCO suona principal Chang Le takes on the solo for this piece. Audience can also enjoy Medley of Sichuan Folk Songs（四川民歌串烧）composed by young composer Wang Chenwei, One Night in Beijing（北京一夜） and Lenggang Kangkung, which comprises of a medley of familiar malay folk tunes.
SCO’s erhu musician Tao Kaili will perform Vittorio Monti’s classic work for the violin – Czardas, on the gaohu. Ending off the concert will be xinyao evergreen work Friends Forever（细水长流）, composed by Singaporean singer songwriter Liang Wern Fook.
The “Arts in the City” series is one of Mapletree’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts to support the arts, by providing a platform for local arts groups and brings performance arts to its working community. MBC is one of the National Art Council’s Arts and Cultural Nodes, which was developed for people to come together to participate in, enjoy, and experience the value of arts in their neighbourhood. MBC is also the venue partner for this concert.

Singapore, 29 May 2019 (Wednesday) – After an overwhelming response from 28 May’s Art in Music concert, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) presents yet another unique artistic experience with renowned Chinese painter Lin Lu Zai with a pre-concert art exhibition themed with the concert titled Blossoming of the Red Flowers – Lin Lu Zai Art Exhibition. The art exhibition will be held on 8 June 2019 (Saturday), 6pm, at the Esplanade Concert Hall Foyer, for concert ticketholders only.
Lin Lu Zai is a renowned artist in Singapore. Born in China, he graduated from the Arts and Technical College in Fujian, China. Lin Lu Zai is the President of Aspiration Fine Arts and Senior Art Advisor of the Singapore Buddha Light Association. He won numerous art awards, held numerous solo and joint exhibitions in China and Singapore, and published numerous publications. Today, he continues to share his passion for Chinese ink painting by teaching at his gallery and in schools, clubs and associations. He believes that art can contribute to charity and has held many exhibitions in recent years in both Singapore and Bhutan to raise funds for charity. In this upcoming exhibition on 8 June, he will specially curate new art works themed with SCO’s concert, for concert audience’s appreciation in addition to music.
This concert by SCO titled Eternal Blossoming of the Red Flowers presents the cultural richness and vast beauty of Shaanbei, and will be held on 8 June 2019 (Saturday), 7.30pm, at the Esplanade Concert Hall. This concert will be conducted by SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh.
SCO collaborates with China’s celebrated banhu master Shen Cheng, suona virtuoso Wang Zhanzhan, Shaanbei’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Successor for Storytelling Gao Yongyuan, folk singer Su Wen and folk artistes from the Mizhi County Wind Percussion Ensemble; a production of anticipation, which will deliver an exhilarating music experience.
Renowned female composer Wang Danhong’s Eternal Blossoming of the Red Flowers depicts the glowing red morning star lilies that bloom on the plateaus of northern Shaanxi, also known as Shaanbei. The flowers grow in between mountain peaks and are often subjected to sandstorms and droughts. Despite the harsh conditions, these resilient flowers continue to thrive. During the blooming season, morning star lilies blanket the mountains and valleys in a mesmerizing sea of red. These flowers represent the Shaanbei region and are deemed as defining characteristics of the folks – honest, resilient and persevering, forthright and passionate. Eternal Blossoming of the Red Flowers premiered at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing on 16 October 2017 and was well received.
Be thrilled and enamoured by this masterpiece, which Mizhi County Wind Percussion Ensemble will perform Overture: Rambling in the Sky to mark the start of the concert. SCO will then perform the first movement: Drum Battle at Hukou Waterfall. Deemed as one of Shaanbei’s hundred outstanding talents, talented folk singer Su Wen will charm the audiences at the second movement: Prayer for Rain, with his melodious vocals.
After the third movement: The Colourful Yaodong, Shaanbei’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Successor for Storytelling Gao Yongyuan will be doing an impromptu storytelling during the concert. Gao Yongyuan started storytelling since 16 years old, he will be presenting the four movement: A Strong Wind Blows together with the orchestra, serenading the audiences with his expressive ability. Along with the orchestra, China’s celebrated banhu master Shen Cheng will perform the fifth movement:The Donkey Herder.
Wang Zhanzhan is one of the most popular young suona virtuosos in China today. He will be performing a suona concerto at the sixth movement: A Song to the Heavens. Last but not least, the Mizhi County Wind Percussion Ensemble will perform the finale: Eternal Blossoming of the Red Flowers. During the finale, musicians on stage will also be playing the waist drums and small cymbals; an uplifting visual masterpiece to experience!

Resounding melodies
SCO’s 2019 – 2020 concert season will showcase international and Singapore artistes. To mark the opening of SCO’s new concert season, world renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie will present DRUMatic Fusion on 12 and 13 July 2019, alongside Chinese percussion twin brothers, Gao Chao and Gao Yue. SCO will showcase celebrated composer Zhao Ji Ping’s latest masterwork, The Feng Ya Song Symphony, on 3 August 2019.
Singaporean violinist Kam Ning will perform the popular Butterfly Lovers violin concerto with SCO on 24 August 2019, ahead of SCO’s Europe tour, which features Chinese orchestra masterpieces. Cantonese opera fans will be in awe as celebrated Hung Sin-nui successor Su Chunmei, top-notch artists from the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe – Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award winner Zeng Xiaomin, Chinese National First-grade actors Wen Ruqing and Wang Yanfei perform the Singapore premiere of Cantonese Opera: Legend of the White Snake • Love with SCO on 26 and 27 September 2019.
Back by popular demand, Songs of Liu Sanjie – A Musical Film in Concert will be restaged on 12 and 13 June 2020. It was co-produced by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and SCO, and world premiered as part of Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts in 2018.
Traditional Chinese orchestra tunes await audiences too. General Director of Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Cheng Li-Pin, will conduct SCO with a repertoire of Taiwanese composer Wang I-Yu and renowned female Chinese composer Wang Danhong’s works.Music Tuesdays; chamber concerts meticulously planned by SCO’s very own musicians, as well as others such as Hits of Chinese Music III: Huqin are concerts for Chinese music lovers to enjoy traditional Chinese music.
Singapore’s Bicentennial
SNYCO’s annual Exuberance of Youth concert will collaborate with Siong Leng Musical Association to perform The Magnificent Steeds by SCO composer-in-residence Law Wai Lun. Savour the iconic Cantonese music in Rhyme of Canton by Chang Ping, as well as Medley of Hakka Tunes by Lo Leung Fai. Experience the diverse heritage of Singapore - with music influenced by Hakka, Cantonese, Peranakan, Malay, Indian and Nanyin music.
In commemoration of Singapore’s Bicentennial, Mediacorp artistes Felicia Chin and Ben Yeo will take part in a theatrical production, directed by Goh Boon Teck, with SCO for the first time on 16 November 2019.
Celebrating Festivities and Concerts for Everyone
SCO’s annual branded Chinese New Year concert, Rhapsodies of Spring, collaborates with Capital Radio 95.8FM to welcome the festive season. Station DJs will bring merriment with a specially scripted radio drama. Dubbed getai’s “Little Teresa Teng”, singer Yuan Jin will sing a number of Teresa Teng’s evergreen songs.
SCO’s annual branded heart-warming Mother’s Day Concert returns in 2020. Dubbed the “Queen of Cantonese Songs”, Angie Lau, will sing with SCO your favourite Cantonese songs on 8 and 9 May 2020.
For the younger audiences to nurture their appreciation of Chinese music, SCO will also present a line-up of musical adventures and concerts like the SCO Young Children’s Concert: ‘DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music – Riddles in the Raindrops’, a musical exploration of Chinese orchestra plucked-string instruments; the Young People’s Concert: Once Upon A Chinese Orchestra and Concert-in-Progress: SYF Demonstration Concert, as well as interactive activities to introduce and educate audiences to Chinese music.
Grooming the next generation of musicians
SCO will organise a Conducting Workshop in 2019 and a Composer Workshop in 2020, to nurture the next generation of musicians. Singapore Chinese Music Competition 2020 (previously known as National Chinese Music Competition) will be open for registration on 2 September 2019, with two new categories; Orchestra category and Solo Grand category.
Led by Music Director Tsung Yeh, the Conducting Workshop 2019 is part of SCO’s talent development plan to provide training for aspiring young conductors. Participants will get to understudy and conduct repertoires such as The Family Legend and A Glimpse of Singapore under the tutelage of Tsung Yeh.
The SCO Composer Workshop aims to provide a stimulating platform for young composers to discover and develop their fullest potential. Under the guidance of Tsung Yeh and composer-in-residence Law Wai Lun, the workshop offers an exposure to a range of compositional approaches for Chinese instruments, and provides an intensive practicum with the SCO. The theme and focus for Composer Workshop 2020 is on composing film music.

This Music Tuesdays concert, titled Art in Music, will be conducted by SCO music director Tsung Yeh. The featured paintings and live ink painting are by Singapore painter, Lin Lu Zai.
Music Tuesdays: Art in Music concert will present a repertoire of poetic Chinese music by renowned composers such as Guo Wenjing’s Petals to Heaven, Jia Guoping’s A Returning Boat in the Snow River, Liu Changyuan’s Dance to the Music and Chinese Ink Painting, Ai Li Qun’s Carefree and Liu Qing’s Sha Wei.
Elaborating on the concert theme, Tsung Yeh explains that “we all know how art and music are inextricably linked. These subjects are also associated with the scholars’ way of life, where they would either work on their art or music in their small study rooms, which inspired me to pair art and music with a chamber concert setting as compared to a full-scale orchestra. In that sense, this is a very unique concert, where music and art have dialogues with one another.”
Painter Lin Lu Zai will present the live Chinese ink painting with Liu Changyuan’s Dance to the Music. It will be a creation of a new painting live on stage based on the inspiration behind the music that will only be revealed at the concert for the first time. Lin Lu Zai was born in China, a well-known artist in Singapore. He graduated from the Arts and Technical College in Fujian, China. He’s currently the president of Aspiration Fine Arts and Senior Art Advisor of the Singapore Buddha Light Association. Lin Lu Zai was invited to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Fine Arts Conference and was awarded a Gold Medal and the Olympic Torch. He was also invited to 2012 London Olympic Fine Arts Conference and was awarded Gold certificate, and also the Silver award winner in the National Art and Calligraphy Competition (China National Level). He has also held many solo and joint exhibitions in China and Singapore.
This is SCO’s first live ink painting-in-concert, and a maiden collaboration with painter Lin Lu Zai. Lin Lu Zai shared that “it will be a concert that stimulates the visual and aural senses. By including both Chinese ink paintings as part of the concert, it aims to bring out the beauty of art and painting in general, creating a different experience for our audience.”
Lin Lu Zai will showcase his artworks at a painting exhibition on the concert day, 28 May from 9am to 10pm at the Singapore Conference Hall, Zhong Foyer. There will also be a Chinese tea appreciation and tea served at the exhibition from 5pm to 7.30pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.
There will be a post-concert dialogue where audience may interact with Tsung Yeh and Lin Lu Zai.

Singapore, 8 May 2019 (Wednesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s annual family favourite, Young Children’s Concert, returns in May, with resident conductor Quek Ling Kiong as Adventurer Quek Quek, to lead the children on a fun educational music adventure to discover the mystery and beauty of woodwinds instruments! SCO's Young Children's Concert 2019: DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music - Winds in the Bamboo Grove! will be held on 17 and 18 May 2019 (Friday and Saturday) at the SCO Concert Hall. Tickets for the Friday show are sold out! Seats are available for the two Saturday concerts at 2.30pm and 5pm, but selling fast!
DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music - Winds in the Bamboo Grove! is the second of four annual instalments of concerts, which aims to introduce Chinese orchestral music, along with the different sections of the Chinese orchestra through an unique and interesting storyboard, and spark interest in children and young adults to pick up a Chinese instrument. This series of concerts was based on a set of audiobooks titled Musical Adventures with Quek Quek – Discover the Sounds of the Chinese Orchestra! which comprises of four books. Written by educational expert Linda Gan with its story and concept by Quek Ling Kiong and illustrated by Ah Guo, the audiobook comes with a CD of music tracks recorded by SCO. This audiobook will be on sale during the concerts.
In this concert, the stage will be converted into a “bamboo grove” where Adventurer Quek Quek (portrayed by conductor Quek Ling Kiong) will lead the audience through the bamboo grove to listen, see and experience the different types of woodwind instruments like the gudi (bone flute) , koudi (mouth flute), sheng, suona and more! Children will get to enjoy Chinese music pieces such as Grasshopper Fooling with Rooster（草蜢弄鸡公）composed by Chen Zhong Shen, Dawn at Miaoling （苗岭的早晨）rearranged by Sim Boon Yew，Totoro Suite（宫崎骏动画组曲）composed by Joe Hisaishi and an iconic work for the suona – Hundreds of Birds Adorning a Phoneix（百鸟朝凤）.
Children can get to meet-and-greet with Adventurer Quek Quek and other musicians after the concert!
Fringe Activities
In partnership with Eight Tones Music School, children may come earlier before the concert to join in the pre-concert activities at the Singapore Conference Hall Concourse to make their own DIY Slide Whistle (La Di). The instruments will come in useful during the concert!
There will also be a dizi (bamboo flute) workshop at the Exhibition Hall (Level 1) for children to learn to play the dizi. Entry to the workshop is limited to the first 30 children, on a first-come-first-served basis.
Both activities are free and for ticketholders only, and will be conducted on 18 May 2018 (Saturday) from 1.30 – 2.15pm (for 2.30pm concert audience); and 4 – 4.45pm (for 5pm concert audience).

Singapore, 9 April 2019 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s Homecoming series of concerts started in Singapore’s Golden Jubilee year in 2015, to recognize and feature Singaporean musicians to be home to perform with SCO. Renowned musicians who have performed in these series of concerts include Kam Ning, Kwok Chin-Chye, Choo Boon Chong, Melvyn Tan and Singaporean string quartet T’ang Quartet. On 27 April 2019 (Saturday), 8pm at the SCO Concert Hall, in the third installment of the Homecoming concerts, internationally-renowned Singaporean violinist Siow Lee Chin will perform with SCO in a one night only concert. Cellist Qin Li-wei, along with 3 of SCO’s outstanding percussionists Xu Fan, Tan Loke Chuah and Benjamin Boo, will also perform in this concert alongside the SCO.
Hailed by The Strad as “a charismatic artist who infuses meaning into every note and whose playing is full of elegance and finesse”, Siow Lee-Chin’s Gold Medal victory at the 1994 Henryk Szeryng International Violin Competition launched her career as Singapore’s first violin soloist to make a mark and forge a solo career on the international classical music stage, wowing audiences in more than 20 countries across 5 continents from the Carnegie Hall to the Osaka Symphony Hall. Her performances have been broadcasted on BBC World News, China Central TV, America’s CBS, National Public Radio, and Singapore’s Mediacorp. Recent high profile performances include the world premiere of Air at the 2015 City of London Festival, a work specially written for her by acclaimed composer Yao Chen, who had been commissioned by Grammy award winning artists. She also premiered Kam Kee Yong’s Chinese Rhapsody at Carnegie Hall in 2017. In the same year, to commemorate 50 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Brazil, Siow Lee-Chin performed the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto with the Orquestra Sinfonica do Teatro Nacional in Brazil. Most recently in August 2018, she had a debut performance at the Kennedy Center. In her debut with the SCO this April, US- based artist and Professor of violin at the College of Charleston, Siow Lee-Chin will perform two violin classics; Henryk Wieniawski’s Polonaise Brillante No.1, Op.4 and Manuel Ponce’s Estrellita rearranged by Singaporean composer Phang Kok Jun.
Singaporean violinist Siow Lee-Chin said, "I am deeply honoured to be part of this Homecoming series of the SCO. It is so meaningful to come home and share my creative performances with the local audiences. I have long admired Maestro Tsung Yeh and his transformative work with the SCO. So naturally, I am very excited to debut with the SCO and also to premiere a new concerto by Dr Ho Chee Kong specially for this occasion. And to perform again with one of my favorite cellist Qin Li-wei is just pure joy!"
Homecoming III concert also features works from Singaporean composers. Associate Professor Ho Chee Kong is an Associate Professor of Composition at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. His compositions for the western and Chinese orchestras have been performed at festivals and concerts internationally. In this concert, SCO will world premiere Dr Ho’s concerto for the violin and cello titled There & Back, which will be performed by Siow Lee-Chin and Qin Li-wei. A Universal Music China Artist, Qin Li-wei has appeared worldwide as a soloist and as a chamber musician. After being awarded the Silver Medal at the 11th Tchaikovsky International Competition, he won First Prize at the prestigious Naumburg Competition in 2001 in New York.
SCO’s three percussionists: Xu Fan, Tan Loke Chuah and Benjamin Boo will also perform Dr Ho’s work for percussion and Chinese orchestra titled The Way of Play, a work which was commissioned for the 2005 Percussion Festival by SCO. Xu Fan is currently SCO’s percussion principal while Tan Loke Chuah is the associate percussion principal. Benjamin Boo, who is a highly active and sought after musician in Singapore, joined the SCO percussion family in 2018.
SCO will also perform Chinese composer Zhao Ji Ping’s Homeland Nostalgia（乡愁）, one of the movements from the large-scale symphonic suite Silk Road Melody（丝路粤韵）. Melding Guangdong folk tunes and music into the work, it creates an impressionistic evocation of a longing for home. The SCO will also perform the Singapore premiere of Wang Dan Hong’s Macau Capriccio in this concert.

Singapore, 29 March 2019 (Friday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s (SCO) Caring Series returns in 2019 to perform at hospitals and nursing homes in April 2019 to patients and healthcare personnel. SCO Caring Series is an initiative which brings the healing touch of Chinese orchestral music to patients and healthcare personnel and to offer them an opportunity to appreciate the arts. SCO hopes to bring encouragement to the dedicated healthcare workers working on the frontline through music.
SCO Executive Director, Nominated Member of Parliament Terence Ho said: “SCO’s Caring Series concerts is just one of the many programmes and initiatives SCO has in place, with the objective of bringing the music closer and accessible to the people.”
