Zhang Lie conducts SCO in an evening of charming music that reflects the distinctive era of its founding Music Director Hu Bingxu. As SCO looks back on its early artistic identity, audiences will rediscover music that helped shape the orchestra’s foundational sound.
Listeners familiar with SCO’s 2001 CD album will be delighted by the return of Liu Yuan’s The Legend of Shadi’er to the concert stage. Programme highlights include two idiosyncratic pieces closely associated with Maestro Hu’s artistic vision, the sanxian concerto Heroine Liu Hu Lan premiered in 1998 and performed in this concert by Huang Guifang, and Heroine Mu Gui Ying premiered in 1999. The concert also features a yangqin arrangement of the classic piece Yellow River, with soloist Qu Jianqing showcasing the instrument’s dramatic range and technical versatility in this innovative adaptation.
Rooted in reflection and remembrance, this concert celebrates SCO’s beginnings, honouring the legacy that continues to support and inspire the orchestra today.
